HLN: “Divergent” could catapult both of you into major stardom. Did you seek advice from anyone about dealing with the potential onslaught of interest in the two of you?

Shailene Woodley: [I’m] taking it day by day; you never know what’s going to happen, so I didn’t take any advice.
Theo James: Being actors, each job you’re on has the potential to go many ways. You do jobs where you think, “Wow, this feels like it’s going to be X or Y” and it isn’t; you might do a job where you think its complete [crap] and then it isn’t. So it is kind of pointless to try and conceptualize that.

HLN: Your fans really want to know: Are you dating in real life?

James: Ha-ha!
Woodley: No, we’re not dating.
James: We’re not dating.

HLN: It seems like you guys are really good friends then.

James: Yeah!
Woodley: We’re good professionals. I’m just kidding! We get along great.

InStyle Found Out What Theo James & Shailene Woodley Really Think Of Each Other

We already saw these pics from this new photoshoot HERE but now they're better quality and we find out what Theo & Shailene think of each other in an interview with InStyle.




Divergent co-stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James may be two of Hollywood’s hottest upcoming actors, but in a sit down for the March issue of InStyle, available on newsstands and for digital download now, the duo prove to be easygoing, down-to-earth, and — much like their characters in the film, out March 21 — fearless.

In fact, Woodley was so intrepid she let on-set hairstylist Sebastien Richard cut her long locks into a sleek crop cut inspired by Linda Evangelista circa 1989. The shorter, low-maintenance style seems to suit her perfectly. “When I walk into a room with the least amount of makeup on I feel the most confident,” she says. “When I walk into a party wearing nice-looking comfortable jeans and a comfortable nice-looking shirt and comfortable shoes, and everyone else is in cocktail dresses and heels, I fee empowered because I’m fully dancing to the beat of my own drum, and that feels good.”

What else feels good? Playing the character of Tris. “She is an incredibly strong human being who isn’t bad ass by nature, like a Katniss Everdeen,” she says. James, meanwhile, describes his character Four as “a mysterious figure who is very closed and very reluctant to trust, but he falls in love with Tris and becomes very protective of her because they have these soul mate qualities.”

"Yes him – get him, he’s the best" ~ Veronica Roth Talks About Theo James

Veronica Roth paid a visit to Dublin recently for an author event and book signing and while she was there clickonline.com caught up with her for an interview.
They asked her about casting, her standout moments in the movie, her thoughts on the characters in the movie being older than in the books and more.
Check out the excerpt from the interview below where she mentions Theo and how she reacted when she saw his screen test..............

CLICK: And during the casting were you sent headshots or anything?
VR: I was informed I would say. But I didn’t encounter a whole lot of conflict over it. Sometimes I would hear about things right before they were announced. But it was never unpleasant. I’m not sure again what would have happened if I’d freaked out about someone

CLICK: They didn’t send you screen tests?
VR: The only screen-tests I saw, I saw one with Theo James and Shailene Woodley. And I saw it and I said ‘yes him – get him, he’s the best!’

CLICK: What were your thoughts then when you found out the characters would be older?
VR: I kind of liked that. It still feels true to the experience of the book because you have to make these big decisions at several points in your life. In the book they make them at 16 but in real life you could make them graduating from college. What am I going to be, who am I going to belong to? That kind of thing. And to me it meant that they were able to get more experienced people as actors. So I thought they would turn out pretty well.

CLICK: I read that you were on set quite a lot. Was there a standout moment when you saw something that was either very like or unlike the book?
VR: There was one… I wasn’t there when I shot that scene but they were shooting at the Ferris wheel on Navy Pier, which is THE Ferris wheel in the book. So it was an exact replica of what I had imagined. Because I did a lot of research for that scene about the ladder on the side of the Ferris wheel and this platform. And they did the whole thing, just like it was real. And it was incredibly weird to watch. Like, this is actually perfect!  

CLICK: You mentioned you don’t really feel like Tris is that like you. Did she have questions?
VR: I don’t know if she ever asked me. She had read the books which I feel like is the best bible for the role. Everything that Tris thinks is on the page so she kind of got the character pretty well. As did Theo, I think he really understood the character of Four, what he is. But the person I talked to the most is Miles Teller who plays Peter. Because Peter is a little confusing as a character – a villain and not villain. So I talked to him – he’s also very chatty!

NEW INTERVIEWS With Theo James & Shailene Woodley On The Divergent Set

Collider, Teen, Popsugar (and others) went on a Divergent set earlier this year and got the chance to speak to Theo James & Shailene Woodley.

They spoke about Tris and Four’s onscreen relationship, changes from the book, which actors best fit the versions of the characters they saw in their heads, whether the second book informed their performances & lots more.



I interviewed Veronica Roth recently and she said when she saw you, Theo, you perfectly fit her vision of Four. Who would you say when you saw them in character for the first time matched what you imagined?

JAMES: That’s a good question. I thought particularly with this the casting was really good, I know I’m supposed to say that. But I think these things can go one of two directions and I think A. they made a really smart choice with Shai because she’s strong but then there’s an emotionality to her which is really endearing; but not in a weak way, it’s in a complex way. Then when I saw Miles I thought he was perfect for it because he’s not just a straight bad guy, he has a complexity to him that you kind of like him a little bit as well. He’s not just this evil foil for making snarky remarks for Shai, he’s a more rounded character because he’s such a good actor and also because of good casting. Then Ray [Stevenson aka Marcus Eaton] was cool because he’s this big dude, he’s kind of dark, he’s like 6’5”.

Moviefone sat down with Theo James & Shailene Woodley at Comic Con yesterday.

Moviefone: What's the first thing you want people to know about "Divergent"?

Theo James: We want them to approach it as something different and new. Any preconceptions about it being a YA -- obviously, it has that tag -- but they're all unique in their own ways. And Veronica has created a very unique and strong and dynamic world, coupled with [director Neil Burger]'s vision of it. And then, hopefully, what we've done collectively as a cast with our characters and the choices we've made make something that is not just a YA movie. It's a movie in its own right, too. It's both. It's an adult movie and a YA movie. And a very strong action movie; there's a lot of action in it, but with a very central and emotional heart.

Shailene Woodley: I agree. That was prefect. I second that.

What do you want people to know about your character?

James: I think he's one of my favorite characters that I've played because he has this, um...

Woodley: He's amazing.

AX: Is Walter Clark your first American character?
JAMES: Yes.

AX: Is this also your first police officer character?
JAMES: Yes.

AX: How is it putting those two things together as firsts? Is it helpful that you’re playing an American cop, as opposed to a British police officer, or an American who has a more mundane job?
JAMES: Yeah, I think it helps. With cops, there’s such a specific swagger and movement to how they are as people that it kind of helps – especially inNew York, it’s very specific – there’s so much character you can draw on, I think it makes it easier. If I was playing an L.A. guy who went to Beverly Hills High School or something, I think that would have been much harder for me, but because there’s so much richness from a New York cop, then it’s easier, because you’re drawing on so many different levels.

AX: Was there anything you had to research or learn to do for the character?
JAMES: I had to learn how to aim a gun and tactics and that kind of stuff. Also, we had to learn the procedural elements of law, that kind of thing.

AX: In BEDLAM, Jed Harper didn’t have a complicated professional history, but he was extremely unhappy. Was it difficult playing somebody who is relatively depressed for a good portion of the running time?
JAMES: I kind of liked that in a way, because I liked his complexity and to make a firm basis in where you come from and where he’d come from. I really wanted to plot his course as a person and his mental state. Someone who’s been diagnosed early with schizophrenia when he doesn’t really have it, he’s been plied with drugs and had all this stuff happen to him I think makes for quite a complex person and so he probably wouldn’t be cracking jokes. And also the fact that he sees these visions. Me and the director had a discussion about it and we wanted to make sure they were physically painful, visually arresting and had a real effect on people. So as a result, I think he would be a fairly dark person.

AX: You went to Comic-Con for the UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING and BEDLAM presentations. Had you ever done anything like Comic-Con before?
JAMES: No, I hadn’t [laughs], and it was quite crazy. The BEDLAM stuff was really fun, but it was quite an experience. The good thing about Comic-Con is everyone’s so up for it and keen that you get a really positive vibe from the audience.

AX: When you first started out as an actor, did you think, “If I become really successful, I will get this sort of reaction,” or was Comic-Con sort of beyond what you’d envisioned?
JAMES: Ah, yeah, well [laughs] – to be honest, I’m a kind of new commodity, so it wasn’t like people were screaming their heads off. But it was just nice to have good questions and positive feedback.

(Kate: hmmmm I'm thinking next time he goes to Comic-Con things will be "slightly" different! LOL)

"Handsome, Intense, Sensitive & Badass" ~ Veronica Roth On Theo James

That was Veronica Roth's answer when she was asked to describe Theo James in four words at an in-depth interview with a number of websites at the Lionsgate offices in Santa Monica recently.
Yeap I think we'd agree with her, don't you?

Q: Can you describe Theo James as Four in four words? (Kate: very clever, lol)
A: In four words?

Q: See the pun there?
A: Let me think. Okay. So…handsome, intense, and sensitive. And, I don’t know, badass? Is that good? (Kate:Sounds good to me!)

Q: Will you ever write from Four or any other character’s point of view?
A: I wouldn’t rule it out as far as sort of like, side material. Sort of like Free Four was. What I discovered when I wrote Free Four was its incredibly difficult to write a scene from another character’s perspective, because you have to keep consulting the original to make sure that it lines up. Then you have to keep the whole frame of the story in mind. It was so hard that I was like I don’t know if I could ever do it as a full length thing. It was fun, but yeah, it’s definitely a challenge.

Q: When you were on set did any of the actors come to you and have questions about what they should be doing?
A: I actually had a fairly long conversation with Miles Teller about Peter. It was really interesting. I think it was because Peter’s a little confusing as a character and definitely one of the stranger characters. I explained some things to him, and he was interested in seeing and figuring that out. I talked to Theo a little bit about Four and Shailene a little bit about Tris. I am sure more of those conversations will happen.

Q: On set, were you able to see kinda first hand the chemistry between Four and Tris in real life? Like is it really happening?
A: Yes. Actually when I saw the screen test I pulled away and I went like this (wipes brow). It was really good. There is a reason they cast him.

Q: What scene did you see when they were filming?
A: It was not… oh you mean on set?

Q: Yeah.
A: It was the knife throwing scene. So, not really a great opportunity to see like romantic tension. But it was a great day to be there. I have written that scene from two perspectives.

Q: Do you know if Theo has read Free Four?
A: I don’t know if he’s read Free Four. I didn’t ask him. I know he’s read the book and probably the second one at this point. When I talked to him he was just starting the second one. I don’t know about Free Four. I am sure that someone has passed it on to him. Cause I mean how do you pass that up, from your characters perspective? It’s not very long.

Q: Lots of fans comment on the characters’ age that have been cast. Do you have any comments on that?
A: I think that headshots look a lot older than people. When I was meeting them in real life, I was like “Oh yeah, this is not a problem!” Like seeing them all together. They definitely look younger than you’d think. I was most concerned about the age gap like looking okay. Cause obviously, Shailene, I think she’s six years younger than Theo. It doesn’t really look that way. I think if you cast an actual 16 year old and an actual 18 year old they don’t look the same age. Especially if the 18 year old is a boy. I think that would actually look kinda creepy. So, I am really happy with the maturity of the actors. I think that was crucial to making that movie work. By casting older actors they have definitely gotten some of that maturity. It’s amazing. I think the cast looks great.

Q: Talking about the actors, which actor do you think was cast the best to your vision of the character?
A: That’s a good question. Who is the best? Actually I think Theo is the closest to how I imagined four. Also I think Maggie Q as Tori is really spot on. I mean I have seen her on Nikita. She’s already Dauntless! It’s all there.

What’s also new for the author is seeing her characters portrayed by people other than those she imagined in her head for so long. And then there’s the added benefit of watching the actors work with one another to bring the story to life. “It’s really interesting to see how the actual actor relationships reflect the character relationships. All the young initiates have a great comrade with each other.”

As for lead stars Shailene Woodley (Tris) and Theo James (Four), Roth responded with an impassioned “Yes” when asked if the two stars have the right chemistry. “When I saw the screen test, I pulled away and I went like this… [Fans herself]. It was really good! There’s a reason they cast [Theo].” Asked to describe James’ Four in four words, Roth answered: “Handsome. Intense. Sensitive. Badass.” Despite all of this good news, Roth has been hoping the actors can bring their unique vision of the characters to the screen. “I would be a little disappointed if it was exactly how I pictured [the characters] because there’s then no re-interpretation, no new discovery. What I was most concerned about when they were casting was finding actors who could capture the internal world of the characters as opposed to exactly matching the description that I wrote. And in that sense I think it’s been really amazing because when I was watching them act I was like, ‘Yes. This is the person, you did such a great job.’ So even with people I was on the fence with, I was really swayed – at least by the end of the day.”

Details sometimes have to be sacrificed with book-to-film adaptations, however, and one change that had to be made was the ages of the real life actors playing the fictional characters. While Roth admitted she was “definitely concerned” about the age gap between Woodley (21 years old) and James (28), once she saw them together she knew everything would be alright. “Seeing them all together, they definitely look younger than you think,” she told us. “I’m really happy with the maturity of the actors.”

James’ age clearly didn’t affect Roth’s thoughts on his portrayal at all. Despite the 10 year age gap between the actor and character, he was Roth’s first pick when asked which star closest matched her vision. James was followed by Maggie Q who plays Tori. “I’ve seen her on Nikita. She’s a badass, she’s already Dauntless, it’s all there.”

One topic of discussion during our chat was the age gap between lead actors Shailene Woodley (Tris) and Theo James (Four). In the book, these characters are 16 and 18 respectively, but the actors playing them are a bit older at 21 and 28. When asked about the age subject, Veronica assured that fans wouldn’t be disappointed, saying:
“I think that head shots look a lot older than actual people. When I’m meeting them in real life I’m like ‘Oh yeah this is not a problem.’ Seeing them all together, they definitely look younger than you think. Theo James Talks New York, Golden Boy & More With Glamour Magazine

Glamour Magazine interviewed Theo James during "Golden boy" Promo back in Feb where he told them about the differences between London & New York, if there's going to be a love interest for Clarke in Golden Boy & more



Did you do any training with New York cops for the show?  
Theo James: I did some kung-fu. No, I’m joking! I started out by hanging out with a guy who was a homicide detective and moved to cold case. He was an extremely experienced guy and very cool. We hung out for a long time, and I would ride with him whenever possible—I would sit in on interviews and be in the background. That was my first section of direct research, then afterward I spent time with [the show's] advisor. We would do things like get sh-t-faced in a cop bar, and that’s when the really meaty stuff comes out—when people can talk a bit more freely. What I find about the police force here is that it does genuinely seem like unlike any other in America and even the world. There’s a very specific culture dynamic, a specific chemistry. There’s almost a specific set of rules because of the city and the size of it. Doing that stuff was the most important. Especially as a British punk coming over from London.

What surprised you the most with training and playing this character?  
Theo: What really surprised me was how good of friends they are. Our advisor's ex-colleagues are his family. That’s a big theme in cop shows. Before I did this show, I would see cop shows and read the language and think it was kind of cliche or something of a by-gone era. But I realized it’s not. They really use that language. The family thing too. As our advisor says, you spend so much time with them and share so much because you see a lot of sh-t, a lot of death, and a lot of pain. Inevitably you’re going to become very close to each other, and on top of that there’s going to be good and bad stuff that happens to you in your career. People have affairs, people have kids, people leave, people come back, people die. It’s pretty complex.

Cosmo: Are you tired of being recognized as Mr. Pamuk?

Theo James: Obviously, it's awesome to be recognized and the show is a great piece of work, but I suppose it is strange because he's only in about 20 minutes of one episode. So I hear, though, he's still in the show by name through the end of season one and season two apparently?

Cosmo: It was one of the most. crucial. episodes. ever. He's the stuff of Downton sex legend!

Theo: They should have paid me more! I mean, it's very, very flattering. But the ratio of work I actually did to all the talk about it... it feels a bit fraudulent.

Cosmo: How did you drop your British accent and pick up New Yorkese for Golden Boy?

Theo: I think [Homeland's] Damien Lewis said this, but I just basically had to speak in the (New York) accent from the moment I got in the van to go to the set 'til the weekend when I was shitfaced. It would be like (adopts New York accent), "Yo, Pamuk! What's happenin,' Pamuk, man? You've been in Instanbul?'"

Cosmo: That was the best moment of our lives to date. Are you prepared to become a major heartthrob in America?

Theo: It'll be interesting to see what happens. I can still blend into the background, but one of my friends was in Times Square and took a picture of a huge billboard and sent it to me, saying, 'Who the f*** is that guy?' And it's me without my shirt on.

Cosmo: Do you feel objectified?

Theo: It's always a bit of a wrestle. Naturally, obviously, nudity is a part of life. You don't mind doing it as long as it furthers the story. But when it doesn't, that's when you need to question it.

Cosmo: Can we assume your shirtlessness means Walter is in a romantic entanglement?

Theo: He's a bit of a player. There's the beginnings of something with Bonnie Somerville, but it's complicated, because there's an affair going on with her and another character, so there's a rivalry there. He's also a bit of a loner and he protects himself emotionally, but he ends up meeting this journalist and he kind of opens up to her and starts maybe showing a bit of his vulnerable side.

Cosmo: Are you a player in real life?

Theo: You know what? I've had a girlfriend for a long time, so I don't really feel like that much of a player now. There were times I when I'd go out and have some fun, but I wouldn't say I was a "playa."

Viewers who wonder why the clean-cut star of the new CBS police drama “Golden Boy,” beginning Feb. 26, looks familiar might want to picture him instead in a flowing wig. And dead.

Theo James, a British actor, is probably best known on these shores as Kemal Pamuk, the dashing Turkish diplomat who died in Lady Mary Crawley’s bed in the first season of “Downton Abbey.” Though the role amounted to only a few minutes of screen time, its impact was outsize, setting off nearly two seasons’ worth of intrigue surrounding the “Downton” daughter’s soiled reputation.

Though it “feels like years ago” that he did the part, Mr. James said he lately gets recognized for it more than ever, at least in the United States. “It’s only recently that people have been going: ‘It’s massive! Mr. Pamuk!’ ” he said.

Few things can jumpstart a career as quickly as being cast in a Woody Allen movie.

In his final year at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Oxford-born Theo James was tapped for a small part in "You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger."

"Working with Woody Allen was extremely gratifying," James says. "He has such a vast catalog of great work that doing one of his films was somewhat unreal."

Anthony Hopkins provided a master-class experience during the filming.

"He's very real about the industry," James says. "It is an art form, to sound a bit pretentious, but it is also a job."

In the 18 months since graduating, James quickly picked up film ("Underworld: Awakening") and TV roles, including swarthy lover Kemal Pamuk in Masterpiece's "Downton Abbey" and ghost communicator Jed, who is diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, in BBC America's new fall drama "Bedlam."

"For (Jed), who is considered mad, it's about expressing that loneliness, of not fitting in, " James says. "But for all that, it's still a drama about young people, and you have to grab the realism to make it work."

While James toyed with the idea of becoming an actor when he was 18, he felt he was too green to embark on that career until he had some life experiences.

"It might have worked for others, but I was not mature enough to do it," says James, who holds a degree in philosophy from the U. of Nottingham. "I needed to be a bit more grounded and to have more to draw from. It was the right decision for me."

Q&A With Bedlam's Theo James & David Allison

Originally airing on the UK's Sky TV, Bedlam, a supernatural drama set in a haunted insane asylum-turned apartment building, will make its domestic debut in October as part of BBC America's Supernatural Saturdays. Uinterview sat down with star Theo James and one of the serie's creators, David Allison, to discuss the sexy and scary new show.

Q: Of late, it seems that the place to go for really good, hard genre TV is the UK. Why is that?

A: Allison: [Co-creator] Neil Jones and I were actually pitching a different project a few years ago, which was also a kind of genre show, and no one would touch it. And I think it’s really interesting how that’s changed. I mean, obviously the big thing is Doctor Who because it’s become such a phenomenon in the UK. It’s a juggernaut. You cannot underestimate how huge it is. And I think the success of Being Human is really a game-changer, as well. It’s ridiculous, really, because we have such a rich history of sci-fi in Britain. I mean a huge and incredible history. I don’t know why [sci-fi] fell off the radar for a while. We’re really excited, and I feel like hopefully we’re a part of the whole revival. It's also wonderful coming to America as part of Supernatural Saturdays, when we’re going out. It’s a prime-time slot, and that’s fantastic for us. It doesn’t feel like a lonely place anymore, with all this going on. We have such a rich history of storytelling to draw from that kind of genre, so it feels right that we should be doing it.

Q: What was the genesis of the idea?

A: Allison: It was originally four of us, but in the end there were three, and we actually just locked ourselves in a room in a hotel for like a weekend...
James: One room?
Allison: Well, a conference room.
James: One single bed... [laughs] Allison: Your mind, honestly. It was a conference room. We had coffee and biscuits. And we just knocked around, and we all came with two ideas each, and we pitched them all to each other. The idea by Neil Jones, who pitched Bedlam, was the one that really stood out. When you have an idea like that, you always wonder why someone hasn’t had it before. And it’s interesting, though, because throughout its entire genesis, it hasn’t really changed in terms of what it is. You can pitch it now, and it hasn’t really changed. Also, we were all really involved, and we didn’t even really know how to do the teamwork thing. It was kind of new to us, but I think it benefited so much from being three people’s baby, and not one person. Definitely.

The "Underworld" franchise has been around for a while now, and certainly, it's challenging to keep something like that fresh. But the latest movie, "Underworld: Awakening," is in 3-D, and ups the action quotient. It also brings to bear a younger, hipper, angrier breed of vampire, who aren't content to let their kind be pushed around anymore. They're personified by the character of David, played by Theo James, a rebel with a cause. James, along with several other cast members, spoke to journalists at Comic-Con, and talked about his role in the movie, and what it was like to work with the film's two directors, Måns Mårlind, Björn Stein.

So, we understand there's not a lot you can say about this movie. So what can you say about this movie?

Theo James: That's true, that's a very good point. I'll begin by saying...[laughs].

So, what role do you play?

Theo James: I play David, who's of the younger vampiric generation, if that's the word. He's kind of at loggerheads with his dad, his father, Thomas, who is Charles Dance, and there's a whole purge, where the humans are trying to eradicate the vampires. He represents the gung-ho, new, younger generation, who want to actually step up to the plate and fight back, basically.

How long after the previous movie does this one kick off?

Theo James: Pretty much straightaway, but there's a hiatus period, and then the new movie kicks off, if that makes sense. It's kind of a continuation, it very much feels like one and two and this one run in sequence, and they're quite similar in what they're trying to achieve. But this is bigger and has kind of a dystopian feel to it, because of what's changed.

How was doing all the action in this one?

Theo James: Yeah, man, I got to do some cool shit, which is good. Actually, I managed to wrangle a lot of training, as well, because I made sure that I gave the impression that I was up for it. I got free running training with the stunt guys, which was great, and boxing, which I'd already done quite a lot before. Knife work and how to kill somebody in 30 seconds. Kidding about that last part.
