A passionate love affair goes tragically wrong, and DS Zailer and DC Waterhouse are brought in to investigate.

When Ruth Blacksmith leaves her husband for troubled musician Aidan Harper, the love triangle results in a brutal murder. DS Charlie Zailer and her prickly junior, DC Simon Waterhouse, uncover a twisted saga of thwarted ambition and murderous jealousy – whilst wrestling with their own fraught relationship.

At 9pm on Thursday 12th July, the gripping crime thriller starring OLIVIA WILLIAMS (Hanna, The Ghost, Dollhouse) as DS Charlie Zailer with DARREN BOYD (Spy, Holy Flying Circus) as DC Simon Waterhouse, returns for a second outing.

Produced by Hat Trick Productions, the 2 x 60 minute thriller is based on the highly acclaimed psychological suspense novel The Other Half Lives by Sophie Hannah. Hannah has created a series of complex and emotional crime thrillers featuring DC Zailer and DS Waterhouse. Hat Trick's adaptation of Point Of Rescue proved a hit with ITV viewers.

Averaging 6.0m viewers each episode and a 20% share, with a peak episode of 6.7m, the first series of Case Sensitive was 1.4m and 3 share points above last year’s average performance for Monday and Tuesday evenings in the 9 pm -10 pm slot.

Williams and Boyd are joined by EVA BIRTHISTLE (Strike Back, Waking The Dead), PETER WIGHT (Titanic, Boy Meets Girl), THEO JAMES (Bedlam, A Passionate Woman) and RALPH INESON (Waterloo Road, The Bill, The Office).

A young and very pretty new DC has joined the team, and when Charlie Zailer (Olivia Williams) catches Simon Waterhouse (Darren Boyd) chatting and laughing with Amber (Christina Chong), DS Sellers (Ralph Ineson) comments: 'I bet he's shagged her by the end of the week.' Charlie's bothered by it – more bothered than she's like to admit.

Charlie is taking out her frustrations in a kick boxing class, where she meets Ruth (Eva Birthistle), a young music teacher. Ruth has a new boyfriend Aidan (Theo James), a talented pianist with whom she has fallen madly in love. But there are two problems. Firstly, Ruth is married to someone else, a fellow teacher, and secondly, immediately after proposing to her, Aidan has admitted that in the past he killed someone – a woman.

In turmoil, Ruth asks her new gym buddy DS Charlie Zailer how she might 'help a friend' check if her partner has a criminal record of any kind. Charlie is immediately suspicious. Fearing that her new friend is in danger, and despite the opposition of her boss DCI Proust (Peter Wight), she starts to investigate. Unaware that Ruth was referring to Aidan, Charlie goes to Ruth's house, only to find her husband stabbed to death in his home. Charlie and Simon take on the case, and uncover a web of thwarted dreams and murderous jealousy...

As cracks start to show in the investigation and her own relationship with Waterhouse, Zailer finds herself taking increasingly erratic steps to ensure she and the case don’t completely unravel.

Case Sensitive was filmed in Buckinghamshire and London. The new two part story - based on the Sophie Hannah best selling novel The Other Half Lives - is adapted by Sarah Williams (Small Island, Poppy Shakespeare) and directed by John Strickland (Bedlam, Bodies). The Executive Producer for Hat Trick Productions is Mark Redhead (Mutual Friends, God On Trial, Bodies, Bloody Sunday). The Producer is Rob Bullock (Mutual Friends, Wild at Heart, Monarch of the Glen).

The drama was commissioned by Controller of Drama Commissioning Sally Haynes and ITV’s Director of Drama Commissioning Laura Mackie who comments: "I’m thrilled to see Olivia and Darren reprising their dynamic partnership as Zailer and Waterhouse. It’s a compelling and disquieting story and Sarah Williams has delivered a superb adaptation of Sophie Hannah’s highly contemporary crime novel."

Mark adds: "It’s great to back on another adventure with Olivia Williams and Darren Boyd as the dysfunctional duo of Charlie Zailer and Simon Waterhouse. This story combines powerful emotions and psychological intrigue with a terrifically twisty thriller story."
